What's self confidence?

30 September 2023

Definately something that plays a huge role in how we navigate life, both personally and professionally – that's self-confidence. It's not just one thing; it's a mix of self-acceptance, self-esteem, feeling valuable, trusting yourself, and more. So, what exactly is self-confidence, and why should we bother building it up? And is there such a thing as being too self-assured?

What Is Self-Confidence, Really?

Self-confidence means believing in your skills and abilities. It's that inner voice that says, "I've got this" when facing challenges or tough situations. It helps you keep fear and doubt in check.

Self-confidence is all about accepting yourself. It's about embracing your quirks and flaws, knowing that being unique doesn't mean being less valuable.

It's having high self-esteem. This is how you see yourself. High self-esteem means you trust your abilities, but you're also aware of your weaknesses.

Self-confidence means recognizing your worth. It's about understanding that you matter, both to yourself and to others. This impacts your relationships, both personal and professional.

It's having faith in yourself. Self-confidence lets you trust that you can handle various situations. It's the certainty that your actions will lead to the results you want.

Self-confidence is taking responsibility for your actions. It's about owning up to your decisions, behaviors, and skills. Confident folks don't mind admitting when they make mistakes.

It's believing in your effectiveness. Self-confidence drives you to take on challenges, knowing you'll make things happen.

It's believing in your own abilities. Self-confident folks are convinced they can achieve their goals and dreams. It motivates them to take action.

Self-confidence is accepting your fears. It doesn't mean you're fearless; it means you're okay with feeling scared and work on overcoming those fears.

It's mastering stress and anxiety. Self-confidence helps you stay cool under pressure and approach tough situations with a positive attitude.

Is more self-confidence always better?

Now, here's the kicker – while building self-confidence is great, there's such a thing as too much of it. Overconfidence can lead to arrogance and even make you neglect personal growth. It might also hinder your ability to build meaningful relationships. So, it's about finding that sweet spot – being confidently you but also staying open to learning from others and understanding their needs. Maybe a sprinkle of empathy is the secret sauce for truly thriving self-confidence.

Self-confidence isn't set in stone; you can develop it throughout your life. By working on your self-esteem, trust in yourself, and how you handle stress, you can become more self-aware and find success both in your career and personal life.
